Formalis is an art based practice bringing artist/designers together with local communities often utilizing community art practices where participants collaborate to create art.
Our approach moves beyond traditional gallery settings to make art part of daily life, emphasising the shared, collaborative process as much as the final product. We provide opportunities for creative practitioners to engage with the wider public and spaces to engage dialogue and value to communities that will benefit from the development of such relationships. With this cross pollination we will encourage and foster a sense of belonging with local residents.
In 2021 PemPeople collaboration with Fabrix gave a wonderful opportunity for UAL students to showcase their work in the beautiful space of the Bottle Factory in the Old Kent Area. The group show came under the general name of Formalis.
MA students who come from a rich cultural diverse mix which gives a more exciting true feel of the area of Southwark South.
Previous years shows have been a huge success for students who after completing their final year, were given this great opportunity to showcase their final products/designs.

Edward Niles
Eddie is a designer that works across design disciplines. He has his main practice in pedagogy and how design can be used to transform thinking and lives as well as offering different solutions to current problems. Challenging perceptions, exploring and developing new concepts and methods of working.
Design and Graphic Design in particular, have no boundaries in its ability to provide creative critical thinkers, social change, and opportunity for community wealth and enterprise. Working with Design Museum on their Young Creatives program and providing bespoke workshops with the Victoria and Albert Museum. RCA Trained, Eddie has worked with a range of commercial and as a socially focused companies throughout his career.
Taslim Martin
Martin worked as a carpentry and joinery for 13 years before attending art school both in Cardiff and the Royal College of Art, awarded the Sir Eduardo Paolozzi Travel Scholarship that facilitated research into West African sculpture. Two years as Artist in residence at South Hill Park Arts Centre, Berkshire culminated in a solo exhibition in 2000. Awarded first public art commission, since then he has mostly been engaged in gallery exhibitions, public art commissions and teaching. His creative output ranges from portrait sculpture to public art and design.
Whether investigating cultural identity through archetypes and hierarchy or exploring the sculptural potential of functional objects, craft skills play a key role in Martin’s work.
Appearing recently as a TV Judge on Channel 4’s ‘The Greatest Snowman’ a celebrity snow sculpting competition in the Alps. He has exhibited in the UK and internationally and his works are in the permanent collection institutions including the British Museum and the Horniman Museum. Martin lives and works in London.
